The Chieftain’s came out strong in the second half and played good strategic soccer. Both teams were quick to the ball and used the field to move up and down with good offensive and defensive plays by both teams. Strong leadership and outstanding aggressiveness by goalie Kaci Panarelli added to the strength of the team. A quick goal by Mariah Boisvert sealed the deal for the Lady Colonials, getting them to the final score of 3-1.

Hard as it may be to believe, we’re actually coming up on the 9th anniversary of that day that changed the world forever. On September 10th, 2001, many of us lived with blinders on, somehow blissfully oblivious to the world around us. The following day, all of that changed forever.

We promised the world that day that we would remember those lost, forever. Hopefully, we here in Shrewsbury fulfill that promise, and despite our busy schedules, we can set aside this one hour per year to show that we haven’t forgotten.

Each year, on September 11th, hundreds of Shrewsbury residents have come together as a community to honor those who were lost, to show the world that we still remember, and to show our respect and appreciation to our armed forces, police, fire and EMT workers who put their lives on the line each and every day, so that we can live in peace and safety.

The event is hosted by the Leaders of Tomorrow Youth Group, and features some brief presentations from Shrewsbury students, our local political leaders such as Senator Michael Moore, Congressmen James McGovern, Representative Karyn Polito, and Board of Selectmen Chair Moira Miller, the Shrewsbury acapella choir, and many others.

We would also like to see entire youth groups attend en mass if possible, so feel free to make arrangements for your Boy or Girl Scout Troop, swim team, cheerleading squad and all other groups to come as a show of respect and bonding.

This is a rain or shine event, and will be held on Saturday, September 11th, at 8PM, at the Gazebo in the center of town, in front of the Congregational Church. Just bring a candle, or buy one there from the kids. All proceeds will benefit the twin towers orphan fund. Most importantly, bring along your love for our great nation, and your respect for those who protect it each day.

In fact, it is a vibrant and lively place, bursting with activity. One of the largest UCC churches (of the socially progressive denomination called the United Church of Christ) in the entire state, FCC boasts an amazing variety of programs and opportunities for outreach and service available to the entire community, including a dynamic music program, outstanding programs for children, youth and adults, a concert series called “Arts on the Green”, and many outreach and social service opportunities, such as Mustard Seed, Interfaith Hospitality Network, and an energetic Earth Stewardship group, to name only a few.

An Exceptional Music Program

The music program of FCC is one of the largest of any liberal denomination in the state, with over 100 members in its numerous choirs and handbell groups. All of these ensembles accept new members from the community. Membership in the church fellowship is not a requirement to participate. ”The music ministry is for all ages, from as young as kindergarten for the Cherub Choir all the way through senior citizens in our adult handbell and choirs” according to music director Malcolm Halliday.

Start of the Season

In the next two weeks all of these choirs and handbell groups are coming back into rehearsal mode, and will be begin preparing music for the entire season which ends in June. Nearly all of these groups have openings for new members. This is a great opportunity, especially for children and youth, to learn about the fundamentals of music and gain skills in rhythm and sight singing. The most advanced Senior Choir has many talented members, including professional and semiprofessional singers, some even with music degrees. This choir sings every Sunday and performs a wide range of music from Renaissance gems and Baroque masterpieces through gospel and contemporary music in a wide range of styles.

Now Is the Time to Join a Choir or Bell Group!

Please note the first rehearsal dates for the new season – these groups rehearse weekly and new members are welcome!

Youth Singers: Tuesday, Sept. 7 from 4:15-5:30 PM, accepting singers grades 4 through high school

It brings back not so great memories of our game against them last year that was mass of yellow cards from the get go.

The second half was all Shrewsbury as our offense brought it to the fabulous Milford goal keeper again and again, with Sophomore midfielder Coupar Lipp finally blasting one past for Shrewsbury’s first goal of the season. That would prove to be the only Shrewsbury goal of the day, resulting in a 2-1 Milford victory, in this well played start to the season.

On the JV side, we saw fabulous play by Pat Buckley, Drew Morgera, Eric Morgan, and a host of other great players. It was great to see one of Shrewsbury’s finest SYS goalies Evan Stambler finally now a Freshman at Shrewsbury HS and throwing his body in front of every ball he could get to. Final score on that field was 4-3 Milford.

Upon arrival Shrewsbury officers discovered that three housebreaks had just been committed on Rolfe Ave., Sias Ave. and Fairlawn Circle. The suspect had gained entrance to the homes by slicing window screens and entering. Witnesses on scene gave a description of the suspect to police. Sgt. Kevin Anderson of the Shrewsbury Police was on patrol nearby at Patrick Subaru and spotted a subject fitting the description in a cab. Sgt. Anderson stopped the cab and attempted to speak with the subject. A brief struggle ensued and the suspect fled on foot towards Elm Street and Rt. 9. Shrewsbury Officers converged on the area and eventually caught him the parking lot of Patrick Subaru. The suspect initially resisted but was placed into custody. Property from the house breaks were found to be in his possession. Also found in his possession were a woman’s wallet which he had stolen inside Patrick Subaru. The suspect had used the victim’s cell phone to call for a taxi. After his arrest the B&E suspect admitted to three other house breaks that had been committed in Shrewsbury earlier in the week on South Quinsigamond Ave. and Lake Way.

Arrested: Rosenfield, Jay P. 701 Main Street Worcester, MA age 42

Charges: 6 counts of Breaking & Entering in the daytime, 7 counts of larceny from a building, and resisting arrest. The subject also had a default warrant out of Clinton District Court.

IMPORTANT NOTE: We have no information that ties this to any of the other break ins in other areas of town. While this is great news, we must still be vigilant of safety, as there are clearly other suspects yet to be found.

Please feel free to stop in on Saturday, September 11th, from 6-8PM, and walk through this amazing property. Then stroll over to the candlelight vigil, and join the rest of the community in honoring our nation.

SHREWSBURY – Given the vitality of this election year, Governor Deval Patrick (D) was more than happy to speak with the The Lantern on this sunny Labor Day afternoon, and we’re very grateful to his press office for setting it up for us. With regards to his progress as Governor thus far, he seems pleased. Regarding the campaign, he is hopeful.

The first of his legislative items about which he spoke was the gun bill, a piece of legislation that would regulate firearm purchases to twelve guns each year. “First of all, I support the right to bear arms. We’re not talking about taking guns away from anybody or impeding or imposing, in any way, on sportsmen and women, or hunters,” he began. “But what law [enforcers] tell us is that ‘straw’ purchases are a problem.” His comment was absolutely correct. This relatively new process is defined by the National Shooting Sports Foundation as being “when a buyer uses an intermediary (the ‘straw man’) to purchase a firearm(s) from a licensed firearms dealer.” The purpose of this process, they say, is “to hide the true identity of the actual purchaser of the firearm(s).” While this bill made it through the Senate, it never made it through the House successfully. However, The Governor closed discussion on this topic with the following: “…I look forward to coming back to that in the next session.”

According to Thomas Friedman, NY Times analyst and author of The World is Flat and Hot, Flat, and Crowded, a “Green Revolution” is going to be a critical answer to these hard economic times. The key to a flourishing in this industry is, not only enlightenment, but also action. On this issue, Governor Patrick explained, Massachusetts has made great progress. “It has been a centerpiece of our economic and environmental agenda here,” stated Patrick. “We have emphasized three things: education, innovation, and infrastructure. Within both innovation and infrastructure,” he continued, “we’ve been growing our clean and alternative energy sector.” His administration has made tremendous leaps particularly in the field of solar energy. “Just take Solar alone; the number of manufacturing and installation companies has quadrupled over the last four years… [Alternative energy] is one of the areas that has just been on fire here.” Being the incumbent in the 2010 gubernatorial race, Governor Patrick also touched on the uniqueness of this approach. “I’m sorry to say that none of the other candidates have supported that strategy and that’s another real choice in the coming election.”

The last topic he touched upon was the life sciences initiative, a ten-year, $1 billion plan, to be spent on various sciences including stem-cell research and the biotech sector. “[This is] one of those innovation industries I referred to earlier that has continued to grow even during the downturn,” he commented. “Increasingly, we’re doing more of the manufacturing here as well.” According to him, this initiative has been rather successful, bringing in companies not just over state borders, but overseas as well. “That’s one of the reasons why we’ve had some 60,000 new jobs added in the just the last six months. That, again, is a real choice; the other candidates think that is not what government should be doing,” he concluded. “I think it’s about creating jobs.”

Postscript….. It’s tragic that such a terrible criminal act, was precipitated by a simple need for baby formula. For anyone who knows of people in this situation, please visit our non-profit organization, the Massachusetts Children’s Fund, http://www.machildrensfund.com. We founded this group several years ago to provide baby food and formula to people in need.

Leading the parade was Governor Patrick, who really went out of his way, both to accommodate our interview, and to stop and chat with hundreds of supporters along the parade route. Whether you like his politics all the time or not, I can tell you that the guy’s got enough charisma for a small army.

Way up in the pack behind the Governor, we had Charlie Baker, Republican Candidate for Governor, with dozens of sign holders in support as Charlie criss-crossed the road shaking hands. Shrewsbury’s Dina Nichols has been working tirelessly in support of the Baker candidacy for months, and help to deliver tons of supporters to the parade.

Congressmen James McGovern, who will be speaking in Shrewsbury on Saturday, September 11th, at the candlelight vigil (8PM in Town Center), followed close behind with a huge crowd, energetically meeting one family after another along the parade route. Holding signs in his parade group were Shrewsbury Democratic Town Committee co-Presidents Deborah Peeples and Paula Buonomo, along with Ginger Conti.

The Guy Glodis for auditor campaign featured a host of notables, including Shrewsbury’s Jason Palitch, and Senator Mike Moore, who is running unopposed for re-election as State Senator this year, and who will also be speaking again at the Shrewsbury Candle Light vigil on Saturday night. We had time to chat a bit with Guy, who’s looking forward to the last few months of the campaign, and testing his mettle with a new position, following his years as State Senator, and Sheriff.

Marty Lamb, running in the Republican Primary for the Congressional seat currently held by Jim McGovern, marched with his supporters. I believe he was the only one of the challengers we saw, but it’s possible that we missed some at the very tail end of the parade.

The Karyn Polito for Treasurer group was understandably packed with Shrewsbury folks, anxious to do all they can for one of our favorite residents and friends. Marching with the Polito group were Selectmen Moira Miller, John Lebeaux and Jim Kane, SRTC leader Mindy Hebert, Maria Sheehan, Phu Mai, as well as Matt Beaton, Republican Candidate for Karyn’s former State Rep seat. Karyn worked the crowd tirelessly, dashing from one side to the other, and really spending time with each person….which resulted in her trailing way behind her parade walkers part of the time, while making an effort to give people that one on one time that she’s so famous for. This included a poignant moment near the end of the parade route, when most marchers were exhausted and could already see those nice air conditioned buses waiting to take them back uptown. Karyn spotted a group of active duty army troops watching from the sidelines, and took the time to walk over and visit with each one to thank them individually for their service to our nation. Very cool Karyn. She’ll be speaking at the candle light vigil as well on Saturday, as she has every year since the beginning.

Overall it was wonderful to see everyone out there today, and I know there were many, many people that haven’t been mentioned. Also, kudos to the Town of Marlboro for putting together a fabulous event, including a car full of dignitaries from Marlborough, England who came out in support of their sister community. A job well-done indeed!!
