SHREWSBURY – Following the negative response received at last weeks planning board meeting, Vice President of Daniel’s Sharpsmart Daniel Kennedy has sent a letter to town manager Dan Morgado and land owner Francis Polito, indicating that they have withdrawn their proposal to build a medical waste disposal facility on Route 20.
Kennedy’s letter cited the long delays in potential responses from town regulatory authorities, with the potential for up to 6 months before receiving even preliminary planning board approval, although the empirical observation was that the writing was on the wall that this would be more of an uphill battle than they were prepared to take on at this time.
The letter, made public by Mr. Polito, read in part, “We understand the perception of regulated medical waste, as well as the requirement for facilities such as the one we proposed … Although we considered Shrewsbury an ideal partner for future growth, it makes more sense for us to establish new facilities within communities which are able to protect a more reasonable timeline for municipal regulatory approval.”
Several residents contacted for this article expressed nothing short of elation at the news. They had formed an organization to fight the project and their turn out at the planning board meeting clearly made the difference. All agreed that we needed to do more to encourage new business development here in Shrewsbury, but the feeling was quite unanimous that this was the wrong company in the wrong place.
