SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – According to the Massachusetts State Police, a Shrewsbury woman was killed in a crash in Route 290 eastbound Monday afternoon when she exited her moving vehicle and was hit by a tractor trailer, police said. The woman, 51-year-old Catherine Berthiaume, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said they originally responded to the scene near exit 10 for what looked like a crash involving a passenger car and a tractor trailer, although police found soon after that the truck had hit something in the roadway.
Police said that Berthiaume, who was driving a 2012 Toyota Camry, exited her car as it was moving down the highway and was then hit by the tractor trailer. Police said they do not know why she left the car.
The eastbound side of the highway was completely shut down for about one and a half hours, before one lane of traffic was opened for drivers. The other lanes remained closed until 8:20 as police investigated the crash, police said.
