Miller announced today that she is seeking re-election to the Board of Selectmen in the town election on May 7th. Elected to the Board in 2007, Miller served two years as Chair and is seeking re-election to her third term.

“I want to continue to work in partnership with the entire community to ensure that Shrewsbury remains a safe, pleasant place to live and work for current and future generations. More than ever, residents are looking for their elected leaders to make tough decisions but exercise good judgment and common sense. This year’s budget is going to be particularly challenging given the uncertainty in state revenue and continuing financial pressures. I’ll use the valuable experience and budget knowledge I’ve gained as a member of the Board to work to maintain a stable financial position so that, as the economy recovers, we can continue to deliver quality services.”

Miller says she has demonstrated fair and reasoned judgment on behalf of the citizens and businesses of Shrewsbury. “I’ve been true to what I believe is most important as an elected leader and that is to take a practical, reasoned approach to balancing the needs of all our citizens. I’ve worked to protect the core services of public safety, education, and infrastructure without devastating the Senior Center, library and other services that are so important to the quality of life for all who live and work here.”

Miller strives to make decisions that are good for the town in the short and long run. “It’s important to ensure public buildings and grounds meet user needs in a safe, cost-effective, and environmentally sound manner such as the new Sherwood school completed ahead of time and under budget.” Miller has also supported projects to position Shrewsbury favorably for business development such as the White City Shopping Center makeover; road, water and sewer improvements to encourage development efforts at CenTech North and East and the Town Center; and updating the Open Space and Recreation Plan.

Among her achievements, Miller highlights her efforts to improve public participation in town government and keep people informed. “I’ve been accessible and responsive to residents’ concerns. I enjoy talking to people, hearing their ideas and learning about their issues and concerns.” Miller created the Citizen’s Guide to the Budget and spearheaded the creation of fiscal policies to provide strategic direction and set budget priorities.

If granted a third term, Miller said she will continue to take an inclusive, balanced approach, working hard to provide services offering good value to residential and commercial taxpayers. “One of my priorities will be advocating for a local-state-federal partnership to address underfunded mandated programs. This list grows every year further restricting the budget flexibility of local officials to maintain public safety, education and infrastructure services to our citizens.”

Miller has more than 30 years of business management experience, the past 18 years as a Senior Consultant with Executive Alliance, Marlborough, MA. She is a Town Meeting member and served on the Town’s Fiscal Study Committee and Commission on Disabilities. Miller has held leadership positions in school, church and civic groups and was named a Paul Harris Fellow by The Rotary Club of Shrewsbury in recognition of her community service. She is married to Dick Miller, a manager with EMC2 and their daughter Mary attends Boston University.

The public is invited to join Ms. Miller’s Campaign Reception on Wednesday, April 3, 7-9 pm at the Italian American Victory Club, Dewey Road, Shrewsbury. For more information visit www.moiramiller.com or contact Ms. Miller at 508.842.1996 or moira@townisp.com.
