SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – Ever wondered what all those stops on the organ mean? In fact, what is a stop anyway? How does a pipe organ work and why are there so many pipes and keyboards?

On Saturday, March 23 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., Organist and Pianist Malcolm Halliday will offer a free Pipe Organ Demonstration in the Meeting House at the First Congregational Church of Shrewsbury. Called “Welcome to the Organ,” this event is for anyone who would like to learn how a pipe organ works. This event is open to all people in the general community, and will be particularly geared toward children grade 5 and older, as well as adults of any age. This class will be of particular interest to folks who play the piano, but should also be fun for anyone who is fascinated by the organ as a complex machine, or who takes an interest in the science of sound. People will also be given the opportunity to play the organ.

Because of the nature of this event, it will be helpful to know exactly who is planning to attend. Please call 508-845-7286 or email the office at to let us know of your interest.

This concert is sponsored by Arts on the Green, a concert and art series at the First Congregational Church of Shrewsbury, 19 Church Road, Shrewsbury, MA 01545.
