Kelly Paulina, a member of the Stewardship Ministry said they began discussing the possibility of having a Day of Service last Fall. “Our Stewardship Ministry works to promote the life of stewardship at Saint Mary’s and to brainstorm ideas to provide our parish family opportunities to use their time and talents through service to our parish and our community.”

“As we started to plan and discuss what we would need to do, we quickly realized that it was going to be a big undertaking, so we formed a special planning team and invited others to help us shape the day,” she said. The planning team had its first meeting in January. “It was exciting to see how many people wanted to help. They began contributing immediately by reaching out to agencies in the Shrewsbury and Worcester areas to ask how we could serve them.” Their efforts resulted in 20 projects that allow parishioners of all ages and abilities to serve and will take volunteers to Worcester, Grafton and Shrewsbury.

Some of the of the agencies served include Mercy Centre, Friendly House, Youville House, Community Harvest, Urban Missionaries, and Habitat for Humanity ReStore. In Shrewsbury, parishioners have signed up to visit and provide yard cleanup for the homebound people of St. Mary’s and work in our own parish gardens, as well as volunteering at St. Anne’s Human Services, the Shrewsbury Public Library, Friends of Prospect Park, The Shrewsbury Trail Club, and the Shrewsbury Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. “We also wanted to give parishioners who are unavailable to serve on that day an opportunity to participate through projects such as creating greeting cards for those who are ill or homebound that can be completed at anytime and dropped off prior to the day.”

There are currently just over 300 parishioners that have registered to serve. The Day of Service will begin at St. Mary’s at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 20 and will include a special blessing and sending forth by the pastor, Msgr. Michael Rose. Service teams will depart for their projects to perform three to four hours of service.
