SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – On the evening before her 16th birthday, it’s easy to understand why SHS Sophomore Brianna McCarthy was having trouble staying asleep. After all, what’s more exciting than your 16th birthday! She had gone to bed early that night, but wasn’t fully asleep, when at approximately 1130PM she noticed that her room seemed to be glowing orange. She got out of bed to try to figure out what was going on and that’s when she looked out her window and saw her backyard in flames!! Without a second thought, she immediately dialed 911 to report the blaze, woke up her mom and stepdad, and ran outside with fire extinguishers to try and keep the blaze away from their wooden deck and the adjacent apartment building behind her.
Joined by her folks, they bravely worked to protect the surrounding structures while they waited for the Shrewsbury police and fire department to arrive. Once on scene with three fire trucks, under the command of Captain Seth Colby, they immediately evacuated the surrounding buildings and brought their equipment to bear to quickly get the fire under control.
Without Brianna’s instant and heroic actions, who knows how much damage to life and property this fire would have caused. In a world where teens are far too often in the news for all the wrong reasons, I love being able to report that in this case, this teen truly saved the day! The Shrewsbury Fire Department is still investigating the cause of the blaze itself. For now, however, I am just thrilled to congratulate Brianna and her family for having the courage to put themselves at risk to save those around them.
