As the largest fundraising event in Central Massachusetts, the Cancer Walk has raised over $7 million for the UMass Memorial Cancer Center of Excellence and is looking to raise $500,000 at this year’s event on September 29. All of the money raised by the Cancer Walk stays at UMass making new treatments available to patients in Central Massachusetts.
According to Giles F. Whalen, MD, Chief of Surgical Oncology/Endocrine Surgery at UMass Memorial Medical Center, Interim Director of the Cancer Center of Excellence, and professor of surgery at UMass Medical School, “Each September, the UMass Medicine Cancer Walk brings thousands of individuals together to celebrate their fundraising success for our Cancer Center of Excellence. Whether it is bringing care closer to patients’ homes or offering the latest clinical trial, excellent patient care and research can be found right here in Central Massachusetts. In fact, U.S.News & World Report ranked our cancer team as high-performing three years in a row—a distinction that acknowledges the caliber of our physicians, researchers and staff. We are also proud that the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer granted the Cancer Center of Excellence a three-year accreditation with commendation, their highest level of approval. Notably, only one in four U.S. hospitals that treat cancer receive this special recognition.”
Greg Bryne of the WSRS 96.1 FM morning talk show will be our host. Cancer Center leadership and researchers will share exciting news about leading-edge research and treatment breakthroughs being conducted at the Cancer Center. Community and corporate leaders and cancer survivors will share how their participation in the Cancer Walk has changed their lives.
“We just found out Scott [my husband] is currently in remission due to the outstanding care he has received at UMass,” said Susan Anderson, team leader for Team Hunters for a Cure. “My gratitude to his doctors, nurses, and scientists for the return of his good health is monumental.”
