This FREE event takes place from 7PM to 11PM with complimentary hors d’oeuvres, cash bar, music, 50/50 raffle and best of all, free admission.

The Italian-American Victory Club is a “private member’s club whose purpose is to organize the Americans of Italian extraction of Shrewsbury into a group to promote the civic, educational, charitable, benevolent or religious welfare of its members and the Italian-American community, and to establish a place for holding meetings and gatherings”. This somewhat stilted passage is from the original By-Laws of the Club. The language becomes clearer when placed in context that the IAVC had its beginnings during the Great Depression when many families found it hard to get by and many Americans were first generation immigrants. In 1934, a group of Italian men had a meeting to discuss how they might make ends meet. They decided to pool their money to buy goods wholesale. The organization that would later become the Italian-American Victory Club had its first meeting on Olympia Avenue on February 2, 1934. As the group’s membership grew, a plot of land was bought in 1937 and a building was erected at the current location on Dewey Road.

Over the years, the Club took an active interest in the town, sponsoring dances, youth sports teams and road races. The IAVC remains a part of the Shrewsbury community even today, holding numerous events throughout the year and hosting a popular bocce league. The banquet hall is available for every type of occasion, with on-site catering and a full service bar. Often times, the facility is offered to various community organizations, either at no cost or for a minimal fee to cover the Club’s expenses; hence, this event being jointly sponsored with the Shrewsbury High School Alumni Association.

The Association’s “Hometown Gathering” chairperson, Mary Rose Casey, said, “Each year many of our alum express a great desire to see friends from other Shrewsbury High School (SHS) classes, while classes with limited budgets voiced that it would be nice to join with other classes to celebrate the anniversary of their graduation from SHS. With these thoughts in mind, we decided to host an event to celebrate multiple class reunions and provide a location where all SHS grads can join again to share an evening.” Several grads who attended past socials remarked that they enjoy seeing classmates more often than every five years, the usual timing of most class reunions. This event gives them a chance to meet alums from other classes as well; however, this ”Hometown Gathering” is open to EVERY Shrewsbury resident, EVERY Shrewsbury High alum, and to their guests.

So – come one, come all…visit with neighbors, family, classmates, teammates, and friends at the “Hometown Gathering” on Friday, September 27, 2013, 7:00 PM, at the Italian-American Victory Club, 26 Dewey Road, Shrewsbury. See you there!
