SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – It was a day that started off clocked in fog, but that didn’t stop over 12000 people from turning out for the annual UMass Cancer Walk, and after a coupe hours of prep and photo taking, as he organizer announced it was time to walk, the sun burst through the fog and it turned into one of the most gorgeous fall days that we’ve seen in a long time.
To say that it was an emotional day would be an understatement. Having volunteered to photograph the festivities, I had the unique chance to talk to one participant after another, and it was quite the amazing experience. Person after person, young and old alike told me their innermost stories… “I’m walking today for my mother…,” “This is a photo of my son, he would have been 4 this week.,” I’m walking for my sister, who is ten years post-treatment and doing great.” Honestly, it’s one of those days that helps one put into some perspective the things we deal with on a day to day basis, and just how irrelevant some of them might be in the larger picture.
I congratulate each and every one of the organizers…including Shrewsbury’s own Nicki Anterni, (one of my favorite people), all the fantastic volunteers, sponsors, and donors, on a job so incredibly well done.
Together we most definitely can make a difference!
It’s still not to late to donate to a team, or begin thinking about forming one for next year.
