SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – Shrewsbury Firefighters and Police responded to a major structural fire the home of Guanghao Xiao and Yu Bai, 2 Birch Brush Lane, this afternoon at approximately 1:30 PM. Men from Division 4, under the direction of Fire Captain Card, were first on the scene, finding much of the front of the structure engulfed in flames. Fortunately, neighbors reported that the family was out of the building safely. As per protocol, the SFD immediately recalled all firefighters who were off-duty, to mobilize, and ultimately at least three engines responded to the scene, along with the Red Cross, and support canteen out of Worcester. No other mutual aid from surrounding communities was required for this particular incident.
The fire itself was extinguished with the hour, but a team will remain on-site for 4 hours in the event that any areas should flare up again.
The State Fire Marshall arrived as well, to begin their analysis of the situation. Preliminary speculation from Chief Vuona is that the fire appeared to start in the bark mulch bed in the front of the home, and spread upwards reaching the soffit vents, and from there into the attic. It is not yet confirmed what may have caused the mulch bed to erupt in flames, and obviously this will be up to the Fire Marshall who will conduct a full and thorough examination.
The Red Cross was assisting the family with their emergency needs, and no doubt we may find that there are other ways we can all pull together as a community to assist.
