SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – The Shrewsbury Education Foundation (SEF) has announced that it will host its annual awards dinner on Saturday, January 25th, 2014. SEF will honor recipients of the John P. Collins Award for Excellence, which honors faculty and staff members from Shrewsbury Public Schools who have gone above an beyond in their duties, as well as recipients of SEF’s innovative Educator Grant Program, a competitive program that supports educational initiatives outside the regular budget and curriculum. The event will be held at Cyprian Keyes Golf Club in Boylston, Mass. at 6:30 PM.
Additionally, SEF will present its Community Service Award to Thomas Kennedy, formerly Director of Human Resources for Shrewsbury Public Schools and an active community volunteer. The award is presented to a town leader who has gone above and beyond in delivering outstanding service to the community and to the Shrewsbury Public Schools.
The Collins award is named for former Superintendent, John P. Collins, PhD, who served for 16 years in Shrewsbury (1978-1994) and continues to exemplify the highest standards of professionalism and a commitment to lifelong learning. This award honors the exemplary efforts of those whose work brings to life the mission of the Shrewsbury Public Schools: “to provide students with the skills and knowledge for the 21st century, an appreciation of our democratic tradition and the desire to continue to learn throughout life.”
This year’s honorees include, along with their respective categories: Dr. Jane Lizotte, Sherwood Middle School (Leadership); Mr. Bryan Mabie, Spring Street School; Ms. Susana Pierce, Oak Middle School (Mentor); Ms. Kim Golosh, Spring Street School (Paraprofessional); Ms. Sara Biadasz, Beal School (Professional); Mr. Peter Collins, Shrewsbury High School (Professional); Ms. Amy O’Leary, Shrewsbury High School (Professional); Ms. Carol Virzi, Sherwood Street School (Professional); Ms. Katie Fox , Paton School (Support); and Mr. David Poe, Beal School (Support).
This year’s grant recipients are Dayna-Brown Dolan (along with an SHS student), Reegan Altomare, Gillian Litchfield, Sharon Wade, Kelly O’Connell, Rebecca Connole, Deirde Lincoln, Sharon Dowd, Jessica Crosby, Stacey Militello, Allison McDonald, Shirley Lemay, Ellen O’Leary, Suzanne Margiano, Cara Demoga, Camille Viscomi, Stephanie Halacy, Ann Early, Kristine Gustafson, Noreen Camerato, Michelle Lemay, Lorry S’Ascanio, and Carol Virizi.
The Community Service Award is granted to a town leader who, goes above and beyond in delivering outstanding services to the community and to the Shrewsbury Public Schools. Mr. Thomas Kennedy became Director of Human Resources for the Shrewsbury Public Schools in 2000, the first person to hold the position with the district, and served until his retirement in 2012. During his twelve years in the district, Kennedy hired and mentored scores of teachers and administrators and helped shape the school district to become a leader in providing educational services to students. Kennedy was a member of the Paton School and Beal School Councils; the Shrewsbury Youth and Family Services Board (serving as 2nd Vice Chair); the Shrewsbury Retirement Board; and the St. Mary’s School Board. Most recently, Kennedy served as Interim Executive Director for Shrewsbury Youth and Family Services from January 2013 through May 2013. SEF is grateful for Tom’s quiet and generous contributions to our community.
