SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – John R. Samia of 8 Fox Hill Road announced today that he is seeking re-election to the Shrewsbury School Committee. First elected in 2007 and then re-elected in 2011, Samia currently serves as Vice Chairperson of the committee. In addition to serving on the committee, he also serves as a Precinct 7 town meeting member and recently served on the 2013 Shrewsbury Fiscal Study Committee.
Samia stated: “Shrewsbury Public Schools have a long tradition of excellence. But, inadequate funding, combined with the costs of complying with resource-intensive legal mandates, have resulted in steady increases in class size and reduced programming. Without additional resources, I am deeply concerned that our schools cannot provide the high quality of education consistent with the expectations of our residents. I am committed to our kids and our community, and will continue to work diligently with other elected and appointed officials to obtain the resources necessary to reduce class sizes as well as to ensure that we provide curriculum materials, technology and professional development that are aligned with educational standards and a competitive global economy.”
Samia continued, “During my tenure on the school committee, I have demonstrated my commitment to hard work and ability to work effectively with other elected and appointed officials. I believe my strong financial analytics background, comprehensive budgeting knowledge and practical business experience are deeply valuable skills that enhance our school committee. I would be honored to once again serve my hometown of Shrewsbury as a member of the Shrewsbury School Committee, and I ask for your vote on Tuesday, May 6th.”
Samia grew up in Shrewsbury, attended Shrewsbury Schools and graduated from Shrewsbury High School in 1988. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and a Juris Doctorate from the Boston University School of Law. He is employed as General Counsel and Corporate Secretary by American Superconductor Corporation, located in Devens, Massachusetts.
Samia lives on 8 Fox Hill Road with his two children, Tommy, a freshman at Shrewsbury High School, and Catherine, a seventh grader at Oak Middle School.
