SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – For most teenage girls, being able to whip up a batch of cupcakes for a party and have them look and taste great is not a shabby achievement. For Shrewsbury High School student Kenzie McCormick, on the other hand, she has taken on a role here in Shrewsbury as our own little “Cake Boss,” and is churning out some of the most fantastic masterpieces I’ve seen. “Since I was a little girl I could be found in the kitchen covered in flour from head to toe but always with a smile on my face,” Kenzie said. ”My grandmother who I like to call my “right hand woman” taught me so much of what I know and together we spent quality time baking everything from cookies, pies to tarts and cakes.”
In January of 2013, while shopping in Michael’s Arts and Crafts she came across the Wilton Cake Decorating course flyer. With ambition on the mind and an affinitive love for baking in her heart, she signed up for the course and the next thing she knew, four courses later, she was making the most amazing cakes she ever thought possible. This is when she realized she had a talent for doing something she absolutely loved.
“Posting our final cake project for class on a social media website received an overwhelming response and I started to receive a few orders from family and then friends and their friends and the rest is history. ” Now, her collection of creations can be seen on her Kakes by Kenzie Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/KakesbyKenzie24
What started as a hobby turned into a part time job, however, unlike most jobs, this is one she says doesn’t actually feel like a job at all. “Creating new cakes brings me such a sense of accomplishment, happiness, and pleasure for me it’s not something I ever feel is a chore. Seeing ideas on paper turn into edible, magnificent pieces of work has to be one of the most euphoric feelings.”
Whether it be baking for a two year old or a 45 year old, the joy it brings to their faces is what drives her to challenge herself to create bigger, better and more creative cakes. “If you asked me as a little girl or even a year ago if I thought I would be doing something like this I couldn’t have imagined it but I am and I’m so excited to see what the future holds for me and my cake creations
