The Shrewsbury Board of Selectmen voted unanimously to place a $5.5 million override before voters on Tuesday, June 3rd. Community Supporters for Shrewsbury recognizes that we have an opportunity to preserve and invest in Shrewsbury and keep our community strong and it will take all of us working together to ensure its successful passage.

The override would fund these critical expenditures.

  • $1.3M for municipal departments to include hiring 3 police personnel, an HVAC specialist and an electrician for Public Buildings, a dump truck/sander for the Highway Department, and general highway funds to repair and improve roads, sidewalks and drainage.
  • $4.2M to fund the School Department’s top priorities of reducing class size and purchasing up to date math curriculum and instructional materials. The override will also cover mandated costs incurred by the School Department. Mandates costs must be paid by law and are often unfunded or underfunded by the state, leaving Shrewsbury responsible for the cost.

The tax rate impact with the passage of the $5.5 million override is an additional $1.15 per thousand dollar of valuation. Even with an adjustment, Shrewsbury will still provide the best value around when compared to surrounding communities.

The average residential tax bill in Shrewsbury is $4,483, as compared with Northborough at $6,225, Westborough at $8,134 and Southborough at $8,675.  Residents of Shrewsbury enjoy a high level of core services and a strong public school system that took years to build.  Shrewsbury is a well-managed town and will continue to be an excellent value to the taxpayer even after the override. If the override fails, the quality of life that we enjoy in Shrewsbury will surely be diminished as cores services will need to be further reduced and the School Department will need to make difficult decisions regarding programs and personnel.

This campaign kick-off and informational meeting will provide an opportunity for supporters to meet others who have signed on as supporters of the campaign, get updated on our strategy and find out what needs to be done to ensure successful passage of the operational override. There will be an opportunity for questions and answers and specific opportunities to get involved. Campaign co-chairs Bob Holland, Chris Coghlin, Joyce Danielson, Beth Casavant, Clint Mills, Ken Largess and Mel Gordon will be in attendance.

For further information, info@supportshrewsbury.com and find us on Facebook. You can also help us now by making a financial contribution to the ballot committee. Checks should be made payable to the Community Supporters for Shrewsbury and be mailed to the attention of Kathleen Keohane at 8 Bracken Road, Shrewsbury, MA 01545.
