Shrewsbury, Massachusetts- The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been really trying to redefine itself since the aftermath of The Avengers two years ago. With most of their second phase of films over before Avengers: Age of Ultron graces the screens in 2015, there has been much catch up to the individual team members since 2012. Tony Stark has given up the Iron Man mantle and Thor is trying to stay tied to both Asgard and Earth. They’ve dealt with more personal issues in their films, but Steve Rogers’s issues are much grander than he ever imagined.
Steve Rogers, aka Captain America has been trying to readjust after being frozen for 60 years and saving the world from an army of aliens. He is now among S.H.I.E.L.D.’s top field agents and continues to do missions for Nick Fury. However, S.H.I.E.L.D. is suddenly compromised and Cap & co. are under attack. Not knowing who to trust, Captain America delves deep down into the rabbit hole of secrecy and is shocked at what he discovers.
The first Captain America movie was my least favorite of the Phase 1 films. It was enjoyable, but didn’t quite stir up the same adventurous feeling its predecessors (and successor) did. Captain America: The Winter Solider on the other hand surpasses it by a long shot, the best movie in Phase 2 and almost the best movie of the entire universe so far. It is a gripping spy thriller jammed packed with action and a stellar mystery to boot. The Russo Brothers have created a fun film that completely takes what works with the Marvel movie formula, tears it apart, and starts to rebuild it.
This is also thanks to the turn of a committed cast, who seem to be having as much fun doing it as we do watching it. Anthony Mackie is thoroughly entertaining as The Falcon, a new ally to Cap and his team. Scarlet Johansen returns as Black Widow to give Cap someone to bounce off of. Robert Redford is great as Alexander Pierce; one of the chairs of S.H.I.E.L.D. and it’s nice to see him back on the big screen. However, the man himself, Chris Evans, leads them all. His performance as Steve Rogers leaps bounds and his desire to do the right thing never seems false and never grows old.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is an incredible entry by Marvel and really leaves a lasting mark on the Universe as a whole. It leaves a gaping hole that will be waiting to be filled while we spend August in space with The Guardians of the Galaxy. Captain America: The Winter Soldier grabs you from the beginning and does not let up until the very end. It’s the best movie out there right now and it is one heck of a ride.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is still playing in theaters everywhere.
