Events occur in real time.” It’s been four years since anyone has heard those words and now one of television’s oldest hits returns. After years of development, 24 comes back to us for a fresh set of episodes featuring everyone’s favorite super-agent: Jack Bauer.

Jack Bauer has been missing for four years now and the world has seemed to have gone on fine without him. That is until he suddenly reemerges in London to rescue his former cohort Chloe O’Brian. Jack begins to unearth a conspiracy involving a presidential assassination and a hacked drone. It’s going to be another busy day in the life of Jack Bauer.

Though it has been so long, 24: Live Another Day has no problem fitting back into its old rhythms. From the opening episode we have a pretty good grasp on who these characters are and what their role may be as the season goes on. That’s completely fine though because the actors playing those roles are quite good.

There is a load of newcomers to fill in the character types occupied by old series regulars. Yvonne Strahovski plays Kate Morgan, a CIA field agent who doesn’t believe Bauer, but probably will. John Boyega (who has grown up a bit since Attack the Block) is Chris Tanner, a drone pilot. Tate Donovan is surprisingly vicious as Chief of Staff Mark Boudreau. This season also features Stephen Fry as the prime minister and Michelle Fairly as the menacing new bad guy.

However, 24 isn’t 24 without Jack Bauer and Kiefer Sutherland slides right back into the role nicely. He and Mary Lynn Rajskub go back into their roles as Bauer and Chole as if they never left. They continue to hit the beats that they had been doing for eight seasons and so does the overall show. You have a fairly good guess of where the season is going to go. However that’s okay because that’s what made the show so popular to begin with.

24: Live Another Day is a nice return to form for Bauer and co. The show has had a long hiatus and it’s welcome to see the 24 crew return for one last hurrah. It’s not the greatest thing on TV right now, but the action is thrilling and the story interesting enough to leave you wanting more. It’s been a long time since Jack Bauer graced our screens and it’s great to see him live again.

24: Live Another Day is on Mondays @9 on Fox. Previous episodes can be watched on Hulu.
