SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – Proponents of the unnecessary $5.5 Million Permanent Proposition 2-1/2 Operational Override are engaging in a telephone campaign harassing local Shrewsbury businesses.  Local merchants are being called at work by proponents threatening them with loss of business for opposing the override.  Apparently the override proponent callers become hysterical when their views on wasteful spending are rejected.  One merchant said:  “I couldn’t believe the woman who called was screaming at me because I disagreed with the override.”  Another local merchant said he had received two phone calls threatening him with the loss of half his business for not supporting the override. A past override opponent has stated he cannot publicly oppose the override because his business requires approvals from the Town.

Apparently, those working to pass the override are becoming desperate. Many taxpayers have said “NO” to the override or politely said “yes” while intending to vote “NO”.  The “yes” people have turned the voters off by their tactics supporting wasteful spending.
The administration has admitted under reporting the number of teachers to the state, resulting in erroneous higher student/teacher ratios.  Under-reporting school town financial support has resulted in “costs per student” being reported lower than actual.  Unsustainable annual budgets have exacerbated the problem. The administration has admitted the override will not solve the problem and will probably result in additional prop 2-1/2 operational overrides.
The madness will end when Shrewsbury officials demand sustainable budgets. Vote “NO” on Tuesday, June 3rd.

Ben Tartaglia

Agreed….Even 1 local Farm Stand has been harassed too,
They even told me it may make them re-think doing business here having their $7000 tax bill…go up 11% – 14%. Almost another $1000. per year…every year, and just add 2 1/2% on top of that large number going forward.
Sure the top 10% of homeowners will not feel much of a pinch…but the 80% of the rest of us sure will.

  2. As the Campaign Manager for Community Supporters for Shrewsbury, this letter is very concerning to me. My team of dedicated volunteers were trained to respectfully make calls and go door-to-door speaking with others in the community about the decision before us on June 3rd. The letter written by Mr. Tartaglia insinuates that my volunteers are not conducting themselves in a ethical and respectful manner, and I believe that is an inaccurate statement. If anyone in the community would like to discuss an occasion where threatening or harassing phone calls were made at the request of Community Supporters for Shrewsbury, I encourage them to call or email me directly. I take my role as Campaign Manager very seriously and have worked diligently to run this campaign with integrity and respect for everyone in this community- both those in support and those in opposition.

  3. These are some serious allegations, Mr. Tartaglia. The merchants you mentioned should contact the campaign manager so she can address any issues. I am a volunteer myself and I can attest to the fact that the training has been very specific about respecting everyone’s opinions and time. We are only knocking on doors of registered voters, not businesses, so I find this very confusing. I will also say that the experience has been positive, as most voters are glad to see the community outreach and those that are opposed to the override have been nothing but respectful, as have I and the other volunteers.
