SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – Proponents of the unnecessary $5.5 Million Permanent Proposition 2-1/2 Operational Override are engaging in a telephone campaign harassing local Shrewsbury businesses. Local merchants are being called at work by proponents threatening them with loss of business for opposing the override. Apparently the override proponent callers become hysterical when their views on wasteful spending are rejected. One merchant said: “I couldn’t believe the woman who called was screaming at me because I disagreed with the override.” Another local merchant said he had received two phone calls threatening him with the loss of half his business for not supporting the override. A past override opponent has stated he cannot publicly oppose the override because his business requires approvals from the Town.
Apparently, those working to pass the override are becoming desperate. Many taxpayers have said “NO” to the override or politely said “yes” while intending to vote “NO”. The “yes” people have turned the voters off by their tactics supporting wasteful spending.
The administration has admitted under reporting the number of teachers to the state, resulting in erroneous higher student/teacher ratios. Under-reporting school town financial support has resulted in “costs per student” being reported lower than actual. Unsustainable annual budgets have exacerbated the problem. The administration has admitted the override will not solve the problem and will probably result in additional prop 2-1/2 operational overrides.
The madness will end when Shrewsbury officials demand sustainable budgets. Vote “NO” on Tuesday, June 3rd.
