SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – At 3:15 p.m yesterday, Air Force One touched down at Worcester Regional Airport, welcomed by Governor Patrick, Congressman McGovern, and Mayor Perry
Even with the roads surrounding the airport closed off to the general public, the crowds gathered throughout the streets of the city, just to catch a glimpse of our Nations Leader, and those who waited were treated to the Presidential motorcade zipping past them on it’s way to the DCU center.
During his brief visit, President, Barack Obama, graced Worcester, MA to present Worcester Technical High School’s Commencement Speech. As the President stated, he took notice of Worcester Tech due to their accomplishments separating the apart from other high schools.
“I’m here today because there is nothing ordinary about Worcester Tech or the Class of 2014. You have set yourselves apart. This high school has set itself apart.”
“Over the past four years, some of you have learned how to take apart an engine and put it back together again. Some of you have learned how to run a restaurant,
or build a house, or fix a computer. And all of you are graduating today not just with a great education, but with the skills that will let you start your careers
and skills that will make America stronger”.
The President also stated “I want the nation to learn from Worcester Tech”. Worcester Technical High School is committed to providing the best academic and vocational technical education. Providing over 20+ educational programs, their schools motto is “Creating the Future through Technology, Training and Talent” which they have succeeded in doing. It isn’t everyday that you capture the attention of the President of the United States. But they did!
President Obama personalized his speech, relating to some of the student on a personal level by sharing stories of his own childhood. He stated how he was raised by a single mom, and his grandparents. But he was surrounded with so much love and support. With the support of his family, friends and community, it has made him the person and president that he is today. The president also emphasized and stressed the importance of taking the skills and knowledge that they have a acquired from Worcester Tech and give back to the community of Worcester as Worcester has given to them.
We hope from generation to generation that our children will grow up right and succeed in this turmoil society. That they will know right from wrong and maybe even grow up to be the next President of the United States. President Barack Obama is a prime example that is doesn’t matter where you grow up or if you have both parents in your life. You could come from absolutely nothing but with a little guidance, love and support, you may grow up to be the next leader of our Nation.
Following his remarks at the graduation ceremony, the President boarded Marine One for the trip to Boston, where he had a fund raising event planned, later in the day.
For those here in Shrewsbury who played it smart, and didn’t venture into the city, they at least were treated to a glimpse of the President in Marine One flying over our town, along with the two other identical decoy choppers.
Kudos to the local and state police, military, and Secret Service officials for pulling this off flawlessly, and with limited disruption to the community. Of course the highest praise goes out to Shrewsbury’s own Ted Coghlin, without who’s years of efforts behind Worcester Tech, none of this would have ever been possible.
