Shrewsbury Library Awarded Outside the Box Grant Shrewsbury MassachusettsSHREWSBURY, Massachusetts - Shrewsbury Public Library Is Thinking “Outside the Box” To Bring You Fun and Free Outdoor Experiences!

Residents of Shrewsbury will soon get the chance to have some outdoor fun at the current Library and the temporary location on 214 Lake Street. The Library is partnering with Redbox, Project for Public Spaces and OCLC to develop a public space for community events. The Library was chosen through a competitive application process based on key characteristics such as geographic and ethnic diversity, local leadership, and innovative ideas for events and community activities. The grant will provide:

  • consultation and support from OCLC and Project for Public Spaces on event and space design, event planning and material selection
  • a selection of reusable materials provided by Redbox

Through the “Outside the Box” program, the Shrewsbury Public Library, the Parks and Recreation department, SELCO, and the Lakeway Business District Association are working to plan and create fun events for the whole family to enjoy. According to Library Director Ellen Dolan, “This is an exciting opportunity for the Library to partner with another town organization; the Lakeway Business District Association, to bring more events to the community. They have done such great job rejuvenating the Route 9 and lake area, so we are very proud to work with them.”  Lakeway Business District Association Chairman Jay Thomas said the partnership is also welcomed by his association. “We look forward to having the Shrewsbury Public Library join us as a new neighbor in the district, when they move to their temporary site this fall. We expect we’ll enjoy many partnerships together.”

“Build a Better Lunch” is a program that will be hosted by Healthy Eating Specialist Dawn Berthelette from Whole Foods in Bellingham. Join her on the Library lawns on Saturday, August 9, 11 AM to learn how to pack healthy lunches at home and to ensure that we fuel our bodies and brains with nutritious foods. On the menu: Simple Smoothie, Not-tuna Salad, and Healthy Cookies. Limited spots available, so please register by going to the Calendar link on the Library website, or call 508-842-0081×2 or x3.

A Pete Seeger Songfest by Jim Scott, is scheduled for Thursday, August 21, 6 PM on the Town Common. Jim Scott, a Shrewsbury resident, collaborated on many projects with the folk legend and will lead a celebration of many songs by Pete and others, as well as his own, for the causes Pete championed. A prolific composer in his own right, Jim was guitarist with the Paul Winter Consort. He compiled the “Earth and Spirit Songbook,” 110 songs of earth by many contemporary composers, including Pete Seeger. No registration is required for this program. This program is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Library. In the event of rain, the concert will be moved to the Library.

More fun programs are being planned, including a Stargazing event, in collaboration with the Aldrich Astronomical Society, Worcester. This is likely to be in October in the temporary location of the Library.

Through the Outside the Box grant and activities, the Library hopes to bring the community together and introduce to it a new gathering space where everyone is welcome.
