SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – Imagine hosting an annual community wide event filled with games, great food, inflatable rides, raffles, music, pony rides and most of all fun. Now, imagine the human resources required to plan, organize, staff, run, manage, play and execute those events. Consider this; over 1,500 volunteer hours are required to direct all that fun at the annual Saint Mary Family Festival! This year’s Family Festival will be held September 12, 13 and 14th at the corner of Main and Summer Streets in Shrewsbury.
In a true display of community service and tradition, Festival volunteers often include St. Mary School students, parents, alumni and teachers, parishioners, religious education students, local middle and high school students, Shrewsbury seniors, Shrewsbury friends, neighbors and co-workers. There are often stories of parents, alumni and neighbors volunteering together to give back to their school and parish. Local students serve together and obtain service hour credit for National Honor Society, Boy Scouts and Confirmation.
In an amazing display of selflessness, volunteers work together to: set-up the booths, games and rides, prepare and serve pasta, popcorn and pizza, sell ride and raffle tickets, run carnival games, supervise inflatables, assist children with crafts and activities, register and direct runners, and finally, make sure visitors questions are answered and folks are having fun! The efforts of these talented volunteers truly bring “a community celebration” to life.
