WORCESTER – Today was an amazing day for the Shrewsbury science fair students at the regional competition held at WPI. Over 115 students from all over the area competed with some of the most amazing projects imaginable, and even among this incredible high caliper of budding young scientists, Shrewsbury did very, very well, and will be sending four students to the state finals held at M.I.T. in April.
Among our finishers, Nidhee Krishnan won one of the second prize awards for her phenomenal project entitled “A Methodology for Scene Perception Using Video Analytics,” a display which was one of the coolest projects at the fair. It was a mind blowing tool which will enable blind people to better navigate their environment. Also taking home a second place award was Lubana Afreen for her project on Osteoporosis.
Sharing third place honors, was Sam Levine, with his analysis of parameters affecting photovoltaic cell output, Raghav Mishra, who designed a home made fuel cell using common waste bacteria, Robbie Li, with Get Green, and Stephanie McCoy, who worked on methods of producing ethanol for fuel.
Among the fourth place finishers, were Ryan Carelli, for his study of rocket aerodynamics, and Nick Silverio, who analyzed frictional forces affecting dancers.
First through fourth place awards move on to compete at the state level, at MIT, which is known as the MSSEF.
The MSSEF allows each school to send one additional individual project and one team project besides those who qualified at the regional fair. Rachel Kositsky, who scored a 5th place at the regional fair will fill the individual slot. Greg Granito and Derek Bain were not able to compete at the regional fair, but will also represent SHS as a team project at the state fair based on their performance at the school fair in February.
All of the projects presented by the Shrewsbury students were just phenomenal and really stood out even in this field of brilliance.
Congratulations to all the contestants, and we’ll look forward to reporting from the the State finals.
