SHREWSBURY – The Shrewsbury Crew team is off to a good start as it just finished it’s fall season. It takes a lot of oarsmen, boats and races to comprise the Shrewsbury Crew team, under the leadership and direction of Pam Krause (Girls Varsity Coach), Russ Krause (Boys Varsity Coach), Stephen Moriarty (Girls Novice Coach) and Jim Carr (Boys Novice Coach).
The Shrewsbury Crew team has 69 members. The kids have been working hard and doing well in their races. Here’s a recap of the fall season:
At the very first regatta of the season, The Tail of the Fish in Saratoga, NY, the Girls V 2 Boat (Jess Richards, Shaylin McNally, Julie Dell’Olio, Kayleigh Gallagher, Alexis Carter, Nikki Forhan, Jenny Sex, Julia Johnson & Emily Waters) took home 3rd place medals. The Boys V 1 Boat (Chris Schumacher, James Glynn, Chris Paika, Matt Kneece, Nathan Nelson-Maney, Jon Sternburg, Brent Martin, Dan Sullivan & Anitoly Devitskiy) took 3rd place medals at the New Hampshire Championships. The Boys V 2 Boat also had a strong finish in this race. Winds picked up in the afternoon making tougher rowing conditions for the Girls team. The Girls V 1 Boat represented Shrewsbury Crew in the Head of the Charles. Katie Lizotte and Sarah Hopkins (Team Captains) led their team. It was a cold, windy, snowy day racing amongst top competitors on Boston’s waterfront. Shrewsbury entered 10 boats in the Massachusetts State Championships on Ocotber 25, 2009. The kids went out, had fun and showed that Shrewsbury Crew is one of the best in the state. The Girls Novice Four Boat (Liz Howland, Emily Waters, Jackie Quirion, Katie Kneece & Jane Aulenback) received 2nd place medals. The Boys V 1 Eight Boat (Jon Sternburg, Anitoly Devitskiy, Chris Schumacher, Brent Martin, Matt Kneece, Chiyu Ren, Chris Paika, James Glynn, & Nathan Nelson-Maney) led by Team Captains, Chiyu Ren, James Glynn & Matt Kneece took home 3rd place medals. The Girls V 1 Boat, comprised of all seniors (Sarah Hopkins, Katie Lizotte, Gabby Demac, Meg Allen and Susan Dell’Olio) just got nudged out of medal contention due to a violation by another team. Stephanie Moriarty and Matt Kneece completed Shrewsbury’s first single sculling race.
Out of the seventeen teams that competed in this event, Shrewsbury placed 3rd overall. Congratulations on a job well done by the entire team. We look forward to another successful season in the spring. =
