Shrewsbury MassachusettsSHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – Todays announcement stunned pretty much everyone in the Little League baseball world, and has lasting implications both for the game itself, and the pocketbooks of many families.

Today, as a result of a study commissioned through UMASS Lowell, by Little League International in Williamsport, the findings of an internal panel released word that Composite Bats are now banned from Little League Baseball, effective immediately. This was done as a result of the very things that make these bats special, namely the fact that baseballs are hit harder and farther with composites, than with regular bats.  As a result, they have become wide spread throughout the league, and most of the “big hitters” in our town use these bats, which typically retail for over $250.

Now, if you’re not in the middle of the Little League scene, you’re probably thinking, “what’s the big deal?”  Well, many parents, at the end of the season, run out and pick up these bats when they’re on sale.  For Christmas, many a Little League player got a brand new top of the line bat, that they now have no use for.  As of now, they’re effectively worthless, and while we’ll certainly be on a “level playing field” with other towns, as this is a national guideline, it will definitely effect many who were used to hitting lots of home runs off their composite bats in the past – not to mention their pocketbooks, as they need to go out and replace equipment.

The next question is whether MIAA, Cal Ripkin, Babe Ruth, and AAU will all follow suit.  If they do, we’re talking major changes, and tremendous added expense to families all around the country.  Stay tuned for more information as we get it.
