I recently went to the Boulevard Diner (155 Shrewsbury St. Worcester) with my son and we had such a great experience, I thought I would share. The Boulevard Diner is fashioned out of an old streetcar. It has been in the same location now for 74 years. We went on a Friday night at about 8:30 PM – after the dinner hour and before it gets busy from the late-night crowd. We walked right in and sat at the counter, which is about 12 stools long, and there are about 6 booths in this small diner. The menu board above the counter is plentiful and the only problem I had was that I like almost everything they serve. I chose the baked meatloaf with baked beans. The meatloaf was firm and tasty with a bit of spice; the brown gravy served on top completed it. The baked beans, which I put right on top of the meatloaf, were delicious and a bit on the thicker side which I enjoy. Traditionally the meatloaf is served with a potato and a vegetable but these folks are OK with special orders.
My son ordered the “Big Bully” – 3 eggs, with sausages AND bacon AND ham, home fries, AND French toast. It was GREAT…yes, I did try a bit of breakfast too. The best was the French toast which they carve from a fresh loaf of Italian Vienna bread – it was a thick slice but super light…another great meal. Oh yeah…we finished everything.
While I was there I saw the fish and chips come out which looked lightly golden fried and delicious. I also saw the “chicken salad with cranberries and walnuts” served on that Italian Vienna bread like the French toast which looked awesome as well.
I also saw a few orders of pasta with meatballs. The sauce looked great! They said they make it themselves and it is a specialty of the house. The portion filled the plate completely.
Unfortunately we did not save room for dessert, but they had 6 different kinds of pies including apple, pumpkin, and Boston-crème. It may be worthy of another stop there just to get dessert.
2 of us ate like kings for $23 (not including tip) – had some good conversation with those around us and enjoyed a wonderful diner experience. Good thing it is open 24 hours…I will be back…often
