Shrewsbury Photos

SHREWSBURY – Are you a budding photographer?  Perhaps just someone who loves Shrewsbury and snapping fun photos in and around our town?  On this page we’ll be posting a picture of the week for all to enjoy.  The rules for submission are simple, you need to have taken the actual picture.  Other than than, any topic goes, so it could be a picture of a person, place or thing, as long as it was taken in Shrewsbury.

Here are some technical guidelines for submissions.  You can submit up to three pics per week, but each must be less than 1 megabyte in size and must be sent in a separate email.  You can send them to steve@shrewsbury.net

You really should  click on a photo to enlarge them and check out the level of detail in them when they are shown in full size.   Unless otherwise specified, all pics were taken by me.  I sure would love to include some photos taken by some other peoples photos as well, so please  send me over your best shot and let me put it in.

Photo for the week of October 10th. This is the home of another of Shrewsbury's founding families, Gideon Harlow. Built in 1827, it was one of only a handful of "brick" homes from that era. The only other that I know of is on Main St, east of the library.

Photo of the week for September 7th. The very first mill to be set up in the early days of Shrewsbury was what we now know as "Old Mill Pond."

Sumner night 1024x681 Shrewsbury Photos Shrewsbury Massachusetts

Photo of the week for August 28th. There are never too many photographs of Shrewsbury center for my taste. It's just so lovely. This was another long term night shot, at f22, 20 secs, iso 100. As the shot was exposing a car came down the driveway, and that added to the photo immeasurably.

Pease1 1024x681 Shrewsbury Photos Shrewsbury Massachusetts

Photo of the week for August 21st. Another one of Shrewsbury's most important early settlers was Levi Pease. He founded the Pease Tavern, one of the stopping points along the Kings Highway stage coach. The home stands today on Main Circle, where it's cared for by it's current owners Jim and Hannah Kane.

SL0 1735 1024x681 Shrewsbury Photos Shrewsbury Massachusetts

Photo for the week of July 15th. As far back as the time that photography came into being in the early 1800's there are photos of Shrewsbury's famous balancing rock. This is located behind a home on Wachusett St near the entrance to Route 290 at 140.

SL0 1557 1024x681 Shrewsbury Photos Shrewsbury Massachusetts

Photo for the week of July 4th. One a crisp evening in early winter, this 20 second shot (f22, iso 100) shows the headlights and tail lights of cars coming through town center. The star effect on the lights is a natural phenomena causes by long exposures at small apertures.

Photo for the week of June 21st. This is one of the prettiest homes in all of Shrewsbury. Known as the "Fallon Homestead" it was owned by Dr. Fallon, of Fallon Clinic fame. Currently owned by the Logrippo family, it sits in town center on Prospect Street, on a wonderful parcel of land.

Photo of the week for April 20th. One of my favorite buildings in Shrewsbury is the gorgeous Bonnie Dell Farm, at the far east side of town near Ward Hill Ski Resort.

Potential Franklin Marker Shrewsbury Photos Shrewsbury Massachusetts

Photo of the week for April 14th. Shrewsbury has two recognized "1767 Franklin Markers," both of which are on the National Register of Historic Places. I believe this to be a third, undocumented one. It sits on West Main St., exactly 1 mile East of the marker at Route 290, and exactly 2 miles West of the known marker at Dean Park. It appears that the stone split at some point and the markings were lost.

Juniper Hill Shrewsbury Photos Shrewsbury Massachusetts

Photo of the week for April 7th. These grasses continue to grow where their ancestors have for over 100 years. Lining the entrance steps which still remain from the remnants of the former Masonic Hospital on Prospect Street. I can imagine that 100 years ago someone planted these, and would be thrilled to know they still exist. Photo of the week for March 30th. The reservoir which sits on the North side of Shrewsbury near Boylston, dumps over this lovely spillway into a small rivulet, that winds it's way out of town. You can find it, by no coincidence, on Reservoir Street near Old Orchard Drive.

henry knox Shrewsbury Photos Shrewsbury Massachusetts

Photo of the week for Mach 21st. Set in the center of town, this monument commemorates Henry Knox, who passed through on his way to resupply the Revolutionary War armies. This was deliberately taken at a high f-stop (f 14) to maintain the focus on the church to the rear as opposed to the technique of shooting at f 2.8 to blur the background.

Lake Quinsig Shrewsbury Photos Shrewsbury Massachusetts

Photo of the week for March 14th. Standing on the Lake Quinsigamond bridge, you can see the northern half of Lake Quinsigamond, formerly known as "the long pond." Also visible of course is the former Vinny Testa's

.

Allen Property Shrewsbury Photos Shrewsbury Massachusetts

Photo of the week for March 7th. This cool old barn sits on Chestnut Street, and I believe it was at one time part of the Allen property.

Charles Dean Shrewsbury Photos Shrewsbury Massachusetts

Photo for the week of Feb 27th. We talk about Dean Park every day in my home. "Dad, can you drive me over to Dean...." How many of us, however, think that without the generous gift of the Dean Family to the town of Shrewsbury, there would be no Dean Park.
