SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – My kids have all raved about the place, so I decided it was time to check out Five Guys over in the stunningly renovated White City plaza, and see just what all the fuss was about. To say it was an interesting experience, would be an understatement, as as long as I was there anyway, I thought I might as well write up a very brief restaurant review for all of our Shrewsbury readers.
I’ll start off with the simple fact that yes, as my kids have said, the food is really nothing short of awesome. I had one of the best cheeseburgers of my life, along with a yummy kosher style all-beef hot dog, and it was really quite fantastic. The burger was cooked to perfection, wonderfully seasoned and so juicy that even as I write this I can picture it! I confess, even though I’m on a strict no carb diet, I actually tasted a few of the fries, and they were crisp and perfect, without being greasy.
The staff at the front desk was helpful, pleasant, and looked and acted very professional form the cashier, to the folks on the grill, and everyone in between. I really can’t wait to go back for more, which really says something.
OK, all that said, there are things I don’t understand. What’s with the free peanuts? Aside from the fact that the floor is literally crunchy from the discarded shells, there are so many folks with peanut allergies that we aren’t even allowed to bring baked goods to school anymore. I can imagine someone walking in there not knowing, and going into shock. To the owners, it was a great idea, but save your money, and you won’t have to have a full time sweeper on staff. While we’re on the subject, can I have mine on a plate, instead of in a paper bag I have to sit and dig through at my table? No big deal, but again, save the money on the paper bag, and use it to give me a paper plate, and I’m a happy camper.
If you’re looking for candlelit romantic ambience, this is not the place and you should head across the street to Elsa’s. On the other hand, if you’re looking for the best burger in Shrewsbury, put on your crunching shoes, and head on over to Five Guys!
