SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – Southwick’s Zoo is launching an exciting new contest that allows supporters and the community to get involved in a big decision at the Zoo. Throughout the month of May, the Zoo will be accepting input on selecting a meaningful name for one of the two new lion cubs. Any Zoo visitor can enter this contest for a chance to win a pair of admission tickets, a plush lion toy, and the honor of naming the female lion cub.
To enter the contest, the Zoo asks visitors to stop by the Parakeet Landing gift shop inside the Zoo to fill out their entry. Due to the overwhelming response of fans, Southwick’s Zoo has also opened the contest up to their online followers who do not have a chance to visit the Zoo before the contest closes. The link to enter will be announced on Wednesday, May 8th on the Southwick’s ZooFacebook Page.
Fans of the Zoo’s Facebook Page have showed an overwhelming interest in the cubs since their birth, which inspired the Zoo’s owners to open this contest to the community. “Our Zoo wouldn’t be anything without our supporters,” says Justine Brewer, one of the owners of Southwick’s Zoo. “So we thought we could involve them in a fun way by giving them the chance to help name our female cub.”
The curious young cubs, born this past October, can be seen in their temporary exhibit near the Petting Zoo. The male lion cub has already received the name of L.J. (Leroy Jr.) from Zoo staff, who named the cub after his father, Leroy, the nearly 20-year-old male lion that has been a staple of Southwick’s Zoo since he was a cub himself.
