Music Review: Freres Lapierre

a3212414813_10Shewsbury, Massachusetts- The Lapierre Brothers haven’t released any new songs to the world since their last EP Adult Sandwiches in 2012. That’s because they’ve been hard at work getting to record in a professional studio instead of their basement in Greenfield, Mass. The production of their debut full-length album has been met with some delays. It was originally going to be released last summer, but the mixes weren’t ready yet. Now it is finally here for the entire world to listen to.

Frere Lapierre has been well worth the wait. The brothers kick off their album with a bang right away with the tremendous opening track “No Hurry,” their best song to date. There were some worries that with the professional mixing and recording, that the band would lose their garagey-beach band sound, but that is not the case. The remixes of their older songs like “Molokai” and “Yankee Swap” sound even better than before.

The new songs are a joy to listen to as well. The first single off of the album, “Buick Skylark,” sits nicely in the middle of the album and was a nice taste of what was to come. The brothers also give tribute to director Wes Anderson in their catchy ballad “My Wes Girl.” Every song blends well together and makes you want to go out to the beach or play Frisbee.

One of the strengths of Frere Lapierre is that their sound is so much fun that you can’t help but listen to them again and again. They have a similar beachcomber garage band sound to them like Best Coast, but the Brothers Lapierre has their own homegrown feeling to their songs. They make you feel like you can just go on a road trip with your friends and have the best summer ever.

Frere Lapierre is a wonderful debut album. There are very few songs not to like and even the ones that aren’t as good grow on you the more you listen. It isn’t just music for the summer, it’s enjoyable anytime of the year even in the middle of February. The album is just plain fun from its killer opening to its satisfying conclusion. Once it ends, you’re going to want to listen to it all over again. The summer is still a long way away, but this can tide you over until it comes.

Notable Tracks: No Hurry, Cosmic Wimpout, Look the Other Way
