SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – Saint Mary School’s (Shrewsbury) Upper School students recently participated in the biennial Science Fair. Over 95 students in Grades 5 – 8 began working on their Science Fair research and related experiments in January.
The students received a comprehensive General Guidelines booklet early in January. The booklet detailed step by step instructions, explanations of expectations and due dates for preparing for the Fair. Science Fair projects consist of the following: Proposal, Log book, Project Report, Oral Presentation and Display Poster. Students were encouraged to select an experiment and subject matter that interests them as they would be committed to the project for approximately 3 months.
On the day of the event, over 30 Judges, including physicians, engineers, educators and local business professionals checked in to review the presentations. Each student’s experiment was judged by 3 different judges to maintain equity in evaluation. Students were required to present a 3-5 minute presentation to the each of the three judges. Students are evaluated on the following criteria: Scientific Approach, Knowledge of Project Area, Written Records and Reports and Visual Presentations.
