SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – The Shrewsbury Alumni Association, founded in 1993, is a non-profit organization whose goal is to bring together all interested alumni and friends of Shrewsbury High School graduates and to promote the best interest of the schools and community by fostering enthusiasm, involvement, and close relationships.
In 1995, the Alumni Association decided to promote the Shrewsbury High School Student (SHS) Grant Program. The qualifying criteria states that all grant funds must be used to promote educational or charitable projects or to foster a sense of community. All SHS student groups, club, classes, or organizations, with a minimum of five students, must either be involved or benefit from the project. Grants are awarded from $200 to $400.
This year, the Alumni Association Grant Program celebrated its 20th year of existence and has funded over $68,000 back to Shrewsbury High School student programs where an estimated 35,000 students have benefited. Funds distributed are primarily received from a variety of graduating classes at reunion time and SHS Alum making personal donations. The purpose of the Alumni Grant program is to assist students in achieving their project goals by providing them with seed money to get their project off the ground and running.
Many of these projects support a variety of educational and community opportunities ranging from cultural programs, research materials, artist supplies, engineering projects, state and local competitions, charitable giving, and a variety of other projects.
Karin Gremo, from the SHS Class of 1973, spearheaded a grant which was given to the SHS School Newspaper, “The Town Crier” in celebration of their 40th graduation anniversary from SHS. The Town Crier was a mainstay in student news during the SHS Class of 1973’s school years and the class donation was recognized in a Town Crier article featuring the SHS Class of 1973.
