SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – After quite a bit of wrangling and a last minute letter from the Shrewsbury Board of Selectmen, a compromise has been reached which will make this a stunning project, while avoiding the extra cost and long construction delay that would have been inherent in some of the other proposed designs.
Accenting the original plan with fancier columns will create a structure that really will be a showpiece entrance into Shrewsbury from the city of Worcester, without spending an extra $20-40 million in the process. Construction is expected to being this coming spring, and will take about two years to complete. During the building process itself, traffic will beed to be re-routed and we’ll all have to work together to keep things smooth, as well as to continue to support the local businesses near the bridge which will feel the impact of the construction process. Those of us who lived through the reconstruction of Route 140 and town center last summer know that while it may seem like a pain at the time, the results are more than worth it in the end.
