SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – Heading into the home stretch on one of the best seasons in years, the Shrewsbury Colonials Boys Soccer team hopes to make good on a prediction several months old, that this would be the year they make it to districts. With only three games left in regular season play, Shrewsbury needs just one win to achieve their goal. That win will hopefully come soon as they face off against Fitchburg today, and then play their last home game tomorrow against Leominster, both teams that have fallen to the Colonials so far this season. The final regular season game will be on Thursday against Leicester High School.
This was slated to be a good year from the start, yet it was always going to also be somewhat of a rebuilding year, with the graduation of Senior Captain and star goalie Derek Proch, and foreword John McBride. Sophomore Evan Stambler had tough shoes to fill indeed as he stepped into the goal, along with Cam Kerr, and both have done a fantastic job keeping those balls out of the net, helped, of course by a noteworthy defense lead this year by captains Spencer Moore and Sean Heinz. The addition of four freshmen to the squad has been a fantastic help, as all of them have long experience at the club level and what they may miss in size, they make up for three-fold in skill and determination. One can only imagine what this team will look like over the following seasons, as these four move up the ranks and lead the team.
Hopefully the team will clinch their playoff berth in their away game this afternoon, but either way it’s hoped that the whole community will come out tomorrow at 5PM for the last home game of the season, and cheer on the Shrewsbury Colonials.
