Shrewsbury flu clinic to be held

Flu ShotSHREWSBURY Massachusetts  – The Shrewsbury Senior Center will be hosting a Flu Vaccination Clinic on Thursday, October 24th from 9:00 a.m. to Noon at the Senior Center, located at 98 Maple Ave. The clinic, hosted in conjunction with the Shrewsbury Board of Health, will be open to Shrewsbury senior citizens and town employees.

All vaccines will be at no cost to those receiving them; just bring your insurance card with you at the time of the clinic. According to the CDC, “Flu seasons are unpredictable and can be severe. It is estimated that, on average, approximately 5% to 20% of U.S. residents get the flu, and more than 200,000 people are hospitalized for flu- related complications each year.

Over a period of 30 years, between 1976 and 2006, estimates of flu-associated deaths in the United States range from a low of about 3,000 to a high of about 49,000 people.” “Everyone in our community is susceptible to the flu. However, people over 65 years old, children under the age of 5, pregnant women, and those with chronic medical conditions are at highest risk for complications related to flu,” stated Derek Brindisi, Director of Public Health. “Complications of the flu can include bacterial pneumonia, additional upper respiratory infections, dehydration, and worsening of existing chronic medical conditions. The flu vaccine is the best protection against the flu virus.”
