Shrewsbury High School Cross Country caps off an amazing season

Senior Captain Dan Mortimer leads the pack, with Shrewsbury’s Jack Southard and Wachusett’s Cole Burgess

SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – Last winter part of the team met, and looking at the results from the 2011 state championship, everyone knew the Shrewsbury High School cross-country team seemed to have a lot of potential. With 5 of their 7 varsity runners returning, they had an edge over many of their competitors who were losing up to 6 of their 7 varsity runners. Not only that, but the discipline and competitive drive to excel meant that they were truly able train together very effectively over the summer, and hit the season in peak condition.

It hasn’t been an easy year injury wise for the team. Early in the season, almost every one of the varsity runners was sick at one time or another. That said, everything came together for the team at the District Championship last Saturday at Gardner Golf Course when we had Senior Dan Wentworth finish 3rd overall and the rest of our varsity finish within 17 seconds of each other and all under 18th place. This pack’s strength carried over into the Divison 1 state championship. Last week, the MSTCA Coaches’ poll did not rank them even in the top 20 teams in the state, and yet at the State Meet they sailed to a strong 3rd place finish, the best Shrewsbury’s Cross Country team has ever performed at that level.

Let’s give a big hand to these incredible athletes for bringing yet another major trophy back to Shrewsbury!

Thanks for the publicity on our team’s historic finish to a very fine season! Finishing ahead of some super teams meant that we peaked at the right time and had great leadership on the cross country courses and training trails! I was more than pleased to be able to coach a really nice group of runners! Now watch for this team to be also the All-Central Massachusetts All-Academic XC team!
