Shrewsbury High School Field Hockey makes it to the State Finals

SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – It was a fantastic year for the girls of Shrewsbury High School, lead by coach Lauren Chenevert, and heading into the mid-season it was clear that it could be a year that dreams are made of. In many ways, it certainly was. Finishing up regular season play with a 19-4 record, the Colonials were named state finalists, and headed to play a single game against Acton-Boxboro for the state championship. The game, held at Worcester State, drew one of the largest crouds I’ve ever seen at such a contest, with well over 500 in attendance to support both squads. With the masterful defense from each of the competitors, the score was tied 0-0 well into the first half when Acton-Boxboro managed to squeak through a couple of goals against Shrewsbury Goalie Suchetha Subramania, with less than 6 minutes remaining.

Shrewsbury mounted several valiant attempts in the second half, but with some questionable calls on the part of the referees, wound up playing a man down for 5 minutes in the second half, during which time the A-B offense managed to score their third and final goal of the game. With the 3-0 victory, Acton-Boxboro won the state championship, and Shrewsbury was the runner up. With over 300 schools competing, I would say that was one heck of a season, and the girls should be incredibly proud of the honor they brought tho SHS once again!
