Shrewsbury to honor it’s veterans this Sunday morning

SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – Veterans Day has always been, for me, a day of mixed emotions.   My dad is a veteran, as are many on both sides of our family – and I’ve often felt that we, as a nation, don’t do nearly enough to truly honor their service to our nation.   For those of us who are a bit older, it’s different, yet for many younger folks, it’s just a “day off from school,” and I think that’s a shame.   That’s one reason why I think it’s always great when youth groups go out of their way to thank the veterans for their service.

This Sunday, at 11AM, Shrewsbury will celebrate Veteran’s Day with the traditional ceremony of the laying of the wreath at the War Memorial in front of the  Shrewsbury Public Library.   We will have a brief presentation about what the origin was, dating back to the original armistice with Germany after WWI, which was to take place on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, in 1918.   Of course, back then, the world didn’t know enough to number their wars – calling it instead, “The War to End All Wars.”  If only they were right.    Shrewsbury veterans will deliver a brief prayer, and along with representatives of the community will lay the wreath at the monument.

Following the brief ceremony, and the tolling of the American Legion Bell the crowd will move into the library for coffee and snacks, and visitors will be able to sit down and spend some time speaking directly to the veterans about their experiences, and thanking them for their years of service to our country.

Here are a few photos of last years festivities for you…  Hopefully you will be able to come out and join us in honoring all who serve.
