Shrewsbury students to star in the Nutcracker

SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – Ballet Arts Worcester presents an enchanting 5th season of The Nutcracker Ballet at The Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts. The magical production of The Nutcracker Ballet will bring festive cheer to audiences young and old for a wonderful start to the holiday season.

“The Nutcracker Ballet at The Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts is a high-caliber performance in a world-class theatre featuring ballet professionals and rising ballet stars from the Worcester area,” says Jennifer Agbay, Director for Ballet Arts Worcester. “In addition, we are thrilled to announce presenting sponsor Commerce Bank, and production sponsor Price Chopper Supermarket, for their generous sponsorships.”

Numerous dancers share their love of dance and the joy of this ballet classic when they step on stage in the spectacular Hanover Theatre. Performing in this dance masterpiece is a dream come true for members of the ballet corps, a dream shared by children around the world every time they slip on their ballet shoes.
Acknowledged as one of the most popular ballets of all time, The Nutcracker has a rich history. The story first appeared in 1816 in a book of short tales by German writer Hoffman and it made its ballet debut in 1892 in St. Petersburg, Russia. The story revolves around Clara, a young girl who receives a nutcracker doll as a Christmas gift and then enters a world of make believe where toy soldiers, mischievous mice and dancing snowflakes come to life in the Land of Sweets.

Shining in the principal role of Clara is Meredith Hunter-Mason, a talented 16-year-old from Sturbridge. Miss Hunter-Mason has been training in Classical Ballet with Ballet Arts Worcester for 5 years. “Meredith is a testament to the exceptional level of ballet dancers in the Worcester area.” The 2012 Nutcracker dance corps includes four professional guest artists from the Festival Ballet Providence, three professional dancers from Ballet Arts Worcester, and 140 Worcester-area dancers ranging in age from 7 to 21, including several members of the Youth Ballet of Worcester Company. The dancers completed a 12-week rehearsal schedule consisting of a professional practice program with a positive, supporting environment. Agbay adds, “The Nutcracker staff of Ballet Arts Worcester want to provide the young dancers with an experience that is very close to working in a real-life dance company”.
