SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – On April 21, thousands from around the world will descend upon our area for what will no doubt be one of the most watched Boston Marathon’s ever run. For one Shrewsbury resident, Colleen Crowley, running in her very first marathon, the inner meaning driving her to this point is a very personal one.
“Ten years ago, I lost my father, Joe Crowley, to pancreatic cancer,” said Colleen. I am grateful my father was around for some of the important events of my life; however, not a day goes by that I don’t miss him. I think of how courageous he was in his battle against cancer and the dignity he showed while dealing with a horrific disease that was destroying his body. I’m running in honor, and in memory, of my father this year.
All funds raised as part of the DFMC Team benefit the Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Cancer Research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, widely recognized as one of the largest and most successful programs of its kind. Based on a rigorous and highly selective process, the Barr Program funds the brightest, most creative scientists making basic research discoveries that are transforming cancer treatment. Barr Investigators have made numerous major breakthroughs resulting in improved survival rates and quality of life for thousands of patients everywhere.
When asked just how daunting the task of running her first marathon would be, she indicated that “…running 26.2 miles is nothing compared to what my father went through and what many others are still going through. Supporting the Barr Investigators and their critical scientific strides will make all my training more than worthwhile.”
Her personal goal is to raise $10,975 towards the team goal of $5.3 Million!
With the race just around the corner, and thanks to the generosity of so many amazing people, she has come a long, long way…but still needs to raise just a few hundred dollars more. Sponsoring her is easy and only takes a few minutes. I just made my donation, and really encourage you to pause for just a second, and do anything you can to help her reach out to children in need right here in the Boston area. Just visit her donor page at www.runDFMC.org/2014/colleenc or send a check made out to DFMC directly to her at 4 Thomas Farm Circle, Shrewsbury, MA 01545 to help achieve a future without cancer. Don’t forget to submit a matching fund request to your company to multiply your gift to DFMC.
