SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – Selectman Maurice M. DePalo announced his candidacy for re-election in the May 2014 Town Election. Mr. DePalo is as energized for this campaign as he was for his first. “Every year presents new opportunities and challenges. I have approached each year with the same enthusiasm and energy.”
Mr. DePalo brings a balanced and fair approach to town government. His skills and leadership abilities, combined with his extensive experience working on town budgets will be valuable in this budget cycle as the town faces growing needs and constrained revenue growth.
Mr. DePalo sees the town facing several key issues. The main issue is addressing the large revenue gap that is straining the education, police, fire, and capital budgets. Providing adequate funding for education is a major issue. In addition, the town faces other areas of concern- the unfunded pension and OPEB (primarily retiree health insurance) liabilities.
Mr. DePalo was raised in Shrewsbury and educated is Shrewsbury Public Schools. He is the Property/ Maintenance Manager at Alternatives, a non-profit that provides services to adults with psychiatric and developmental disabilities. His wife Barbara teaches in Shrewsbury Public Schools. Mr. DePalo has demonstrated his leadership abilities as Chairman of the Selectmen for five separate terms. He co-chaired both the 2007 and 2013 Fiscal Study Committees, and was a member of the High School/ Middle School Building Committee, as well as the School Space Needs Committee. In addition, he is the current regional representative to the Central Mass Metropolitan Planning Commission, which plans and allocates State & Federal Road funds. He has also been a town meeting member since 1992. He holds a Business Management degree from Worcester State University.
