Shrewsbury’s newest flagship school is ready at last!

_SL40954SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – It will be a week that you will remember for decades to come, as Shrewsbury’s newest building, the Sherwood Middle School, prepares to welcome a very lucky batch of students. I know this for sure, because I can still recall the day we opened Floral St., and the wonderful ribbon cutting at SHS. Trust me, this will be a momentous occasion.

_SL40955Completely way ahead of schedule, and millions of dollars under budget, this building is nothing short of breathtaking, and looks like it could easily fit right into a college campus somewhere. Last night, a lucky few had the opportunity to attend the “pre-dedication” at the property, and were given a tour of the facility by some extremely knowledgable Sherwood students who had obviously been practicing all week long. Structurally, it’s simply breathtaking, with blazing colors, and a wonderful floor plan with individual “communities” of classrooms, set up in color coded pods. The common areas are even more amazing, from the music room that certainly rivals any I’ve seen, to the media center, and the gym/auditorium that is open and spacious, yet feels homey at the same time.

_SL40938Technologically, this will clearly be the most advanced property in Worcester County. I had the chance to walk through several months ago while it was being framed and the wiring is like nothing I’ve ever seen. high speed internet lines run throughout the building, and there are more Apple computers than I’ve ever seen in one place. Each classroom is as high tech as can be, with interactive white boards, document cameras, iPad charging stations, and so much more. Throughout the building, plasma TV’s mounted on the walls provide information on the days events, and the building features a host of green initiatives, from its energy efficient lighting, to a passive solar heating system.

_SL40944The classrooms are all set up now, with names on the doors and everything, and this week the belongings will find their way over to the new building with these very fortunate kids starting class there next week. I’d like to send out my personal thanks to the building committee, chaired once again by Henry Fitzgerald, for a job very, very well done. I’ll add to that my thanks to the Yes for Sherwood group that worked tirelessly to get the debt exclusion passed, as well as the entire school department and my former colleagues on the School Committee for championing the cause through to fruition.

The formal dedication will be held this spring, and hopefully you can make time to take a tour. It’s very well worth it!
