Shrewsbury’s Spring St. Students once again reach out to change the world
Some great volunteers from the Spring St student council, posing with yours truly.
SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – It’s a tradition here in Shrewsbury that dates back to the mid 1990’s, when a dear friend who was then running the “kids to kids” group at Spring Street School suggested an interesting partnership. The students, she said, would collect all the food that they could to provide Thanksgiving dinners for people in need within the community, and I’d provide the turkeys to go with them. It was a system that just grew year after year, as it spread from Spring to Floral, then to Paton and the Middle Schools, and at it’s peak, just before the recession kicked in, we managed to pull together close to 10,000 pounds of food in a single holiday drive!
This year the fantastic Student Council members at Spring Street School were at it again in full force, and single handedly managed to pull together close to 750 pounds of food that will soon be gracing the dinner tables of families in need here in the Shrewsbury area. With children like this already reaching out to help others, at such a young age, it undoubtedly gives us all hope for the future. Congratulations to these amazing students, their teachers, and all who make Spring St such a fantastic place to be.
