Sovereign Bank lends support to local charity

Massachusetts Children’s Friend President Sam Levine accepts the generous donation from Sovereign Bank.

SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – Many businesses celebrate their grand openings with a variety of different events, but for Shrewsbury’s newest bank branch, the Sovereign location at White City today was something special for many, many people.  For while others turn to lavish parties,  Sovereign instead decided to make their presence known by helping those in need right here in the local community.  At this morning grand ribbon cutting, branch manager Yasmina Altomare was joined by her team and regional representatives from Sovereign as they presented a check to Sam Levine, President of the Shrewsbury based Massachusetts Children’s Fund for $1000.  Levine gave a brief presentation on the great work that MCF has been doing to service the needs of underprivileged children here in Worcester County.  According to Levine, this could not have come at a better time.  “Moving into the holiday season the need for food and supplies is greater than ever, and these funds will allow our organization to purchase over 3000 meals for babies both in DCF Foster Care, and living in the homes of the working poor, where families often have to choose between food and heat, or food and medical services.”  He went on to discuss a recent study by the Greater Boston Food Bank which indicated that over 125,000 children in Massachusetts live each and every day in a state of “food risk,” where they may not have sufficient food to make it through the day, and that requests to food services are up 23% in recent years with over 500,000 people seeking food assistance annually.  Following his discussion of both the depth of the problem, and how the funds would be used, the Sovereign executives present at the opening announced that they had decided to double to donation amount to $2000!!  Talk about making a difference to the world.

The Massachusetts Children’s Fund was established in 2006 to provide food and supplies to children in need who just aren’t getting the services they require from governmental organizations.  They are a 501c3 non-profit organization, staffed entirely by volunteers, and 100% of all funds received go directly to the population which they serve.   Referrals come directly from various state bodies and non-governmental charities, and MCF is able to respond quickly to provide urgent and sustaining resources at times when they are needed most.   Levine indicated that as the economy has tightened, donations to all charities have understandably been reduced, and they are now in the process of launching a capital campaign in the hopes of raising $20,000 by the end of 2012 to ensure that all families have enough to get them through this holiday season.   If you’d like to donate, you can stop by their website at www.machildrensfund.com
