SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – You would never know from chatting with SHS Junior Dominique Hall on Saturday morning that the pressure was on, since she seemed, as always, just as relaxed as can be. Having swept pretty much every 300m race here in Central Mass., Dom returned for a second time to the Massachusetts All-State Competition, looking to beat her 4th place finish from 2012. She certainly didn’t disappoint any of the thousand people that were watching, as she turned in the performance of a lifetime without batting an eye.
When she competes out here in our district, seeing her win every 300m race was about as anticipated as watching Shrewsbury’s John Murray run the 2-mile, but at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, she wasn’t competing against just anyone, but against the absolute fastest runners in the state, all superstars in their own right, and this would prover to be the closet race I’ve seen her in all year.
Edging out Acton-Boxborough senior Maya Jarostchuk, and Melrose senior Bianca St Fleur, Dom bolted to a 40.14s 300m run that proved to be one of the top 20 times run in the United States so far this year! That was enough to make her the Massachusetts State Champion for 2013, and earn her a ticket to the All-New England competition next weekend, (where she’ll be joined by another SHS star Jay Reynolds, who will be competing in the 55m dash.) As sweet and modest as she is fast, it’s hard to remember that Dom is only a junior, and has another year and a half to perfect what she’s already doing so well. Keep your eyes on her, as I’m sure many colleges already are, because you may very well be witnessing history before she’s finished with this stellar career.
