Black Friday 2020: Bruno Le Maire requests a postponement

Black Friday 2020 will take place on November 27th. But will this be the case in France? Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire wants Amazon and other retailers to postpone the promotional event.

“Is next Friday the right time to organize a Black Friday?” My answer is no, ”said Bruno Le Maire to the Senate. He therefore urged dealers (physical and online) “to look into all possibilities to postpone this operation, which does not make sense under the current circumstances”. He adds that during this time he will have the opportunity to “talk to them about it” and “ask them to show a sense of responsibility”.

In contrast to the sales dates, the government has no control over the implementation of promotions for private initiatives. Black Friday is one such initiative.

A few days ago, Frédéric Duval, the head of Amazon France, mentioned an uncertainty for Black Friday. “The authorities speak regularly and sometimes change their minds,” he said.

In the coming days, the government must announce the modalities of a gradual easing of detention from December 1st. However, many elected officials and professional associations are calling for small so-called “non-essential” stores to reopen on November 27th. They worry that they will be penalized regarding pending businesses and online sales pages.
