Gabe Newell (Valve) is going to send a gnome into space

Gabe Newell, Boss of Valve (Half Life), will send the gnome “Chompski” into space. Chompski, who first appeared in Half-Life 2: Episode 2, will reach Earth orbit in mid-November on a rocket from New Zealand’s Rocket Lab. To mark the occasion, Gabe Newell has pledged to donate a dollar to Starship Children’s Hospital for each viewer of the live stream of the rocket launch (or the video that will be broadcast afterwards). The “space gnome” is 15 cm tall and was designed by the company in SFX Weta Workshop. The whole figure is carved from titanium.

This particular design will make it possible to “test and validate a new 3D printing technique that could be used for future spacecraft components,” according to Rocket Lab. Chompski will not be alone during his space trip planned for December 16. The Rocket Lab rocket will carry no fewer than 29 satellites to monitor maritime traffic.
