Sony buys Crunchyroll for one billion dollars

Does Sony have the idea of adding some extra services to its PS5? If we are to believe the Nikkei Asia, Sony is about to buy the American Crunchyroll, an SVoD service that specializes in anime of Japanese origin. The takeover bid would run for nearly a billion dollars (100 billion yen or $ 957 million), a significant sum for a company that still occupies a niche market in the very large SVoD market. Negotiations on the takeover began earlier this year and the deal is now nearing completion.

According to Nikkei Asia, Sony would have rejected an initial takeover offer (from Crunchyroll) of $ 1.5 billion, which it believed was too high, before settling on 100 billion yen. Anime is hugely popular on SVoD platforms (Netflix devotes a large portion to it), which undoubtedly explains Sony’s drive to acquire a dedicated service. The monthly subscription for Crunchyroll costs between 4.99 and 6.49 euros in France.
